Where is Stainburn?

Stainburn sits towards the northern end of the west coast of Cumbria. It is 7 miles north of the large town of Whitehaven and less than a mile east of the smaller town of Workington. The county of Cumbria itself is one of the two northernmost counties in England and sits just south of the Scottish Borders. Cumbria has over 150 miles of coastline, which many people don’t know, and is home to long stretches of beautiful sandy beach, craggy cliffs and coastal ports.

Cumbria is more commonly associated as the home of the world-famous Lake District National Park. The Lakes covers most of Cumbria and stretches almost to Carlisle in the north, Penrith to the east, to Kendal in the south and all the way to the west coast.

To reach Stainburn you can arrive via the M6 junction 40 and travel west along the A66 almost to Workington, before turning off into Stainburn, or join the A66 from the M1 in the east. This is the most direct route to Stainburn from much of the UK. You can take a more scenic route skirting around the south of the Lakes and travel up the west coast of Cumbria via the A595 which will take you along the beautiful coast with the Irish Sea twinkling on the left and the Lake District fells looming to your right.

What is the population of Stainburn?

According to the 2021 UK census, Stainburn Cumbria had a population of 2,122. In contrast nearby Workington has a population of around 21,281.

What is there to do in Stainburn?

As a small village, Stainburn sits along the River Derwent and has plenty of walking routes right from its doorstep. For those who enjoy walking, there is plenty of coastline within a short drive to explore or head inland towards the Lake District to explore the northern and western fells.

A 30 minute drive will see you at the lakes of Loweswater or Bassenthwaite Lake, where you can swim, paddle or walk. Further into the national park at Derwentwater and Ullswater you can hire boats, paddleboards or sailing boats and spend time on the most scenic lakes in the Lake District.

Closer to home, Stainburn has a busy community where regular events are held throughout the year. There is a wonderful local pub, The Briery Stainburn, which serves delicious, locally sourced food daily and offers seasonal menus, themed nights and fantastic roast dinners. The village is also home to a small children’s park which is along Juniper Drive.

Just a mile out of the village along Stainburn Road is Workington which offers plenty of additional things to do. There is a Plaza Cinema here, supermarkets, shops, cafes, restaurants and clubs. You’ll also find soft play areas, a speedway, museums and theatres, a shopping centre and escape room. Whatever the weather, there are plenty of activities to enjoy for people of all ages and interests in and around Stainburn and Workington.

Close to Stainburn there are 5 beaches within 10 miles drive the nearest being Workington Beach which is a shingle beach just 1.5 miles from the village. There are also Siddick Beach, Parton Beach, Whitehaven Beach & Maryport Beach all within a short distance. Further afield are the popular beaches of Allonby to the north and St. Bees to the south. Fishing is a popular activity along the west coast of Cumbria and you’ll often see people perched along the seafront and natural harbours dotted with fishing boats here.

What amenities are there in Stainburn?

The village of Stainburn has a petrol station with SPAR shop just to the east of the village, close to Farries Field. As mentioned, above and in more detail below, there is an amazing pub here, The Briery Stainburn, and a children’s playground at the southern end of the village.

It is super easy to get to Stainburn as it is just off the A66 which is the main east-west A road across the neck of England. The nearest train station to the village is Workington Train Station which sits on the Cumbrian Coast Line route that operates between Barrow-in-Furness and Carlisle. It is thought to be one of the most picturesque rail journeys in the UK in fact!

The bus station in Workington is a short walk from the train station and Stainburn sits on the X5 bus route that runs between Keswick and Workington. There are regular buses through the village daily, making it easier to get around by bus than by train.

The nearest GP medical practices are all in nearby Workington, where there are 5 to choose from. Workington is also where the nearest vets, opticians and a community hospital are located. You’ll find car garages, supermarkets, fast food chains, fuel stations, gyms, sports and leisure facilities and nurseries in Workington too.

There is a wide range of primary schools in Workington, or village schools in the nearby villages of Great Clifton, Northside and Seaton. In Workington you also have Workington Academy, which is a high school and associated sixth form, West Coast Sixth Form, as well as St. Joseph’s Catholic High School. Between Workington and Whitehaven is Lakes College which is another further education institution offering courses for teenage school leavers. For university courses, the University of Central Lancashire has a campus just outside of Whitehaven, which is around 11 miles from Stainburn.

What is Stainburn best known for?

Stainburn Cumbria is probably best known for its pub! The Briery is run by award-winning chef Mark Galloway. Self-described as a ‘distinctive gastropub’, The Briery welcomes visitors from near and far who come to sample the vibrant food curated by a world-famous chef.
