Wear a scarf to work day

Wear your scarf day – Friday 4th December 2020

The Salvation Army is famous for its work with people who have fallen on hard times: it offers help to the elderly, the young, offenders, drug addicts and blind and disabled people; it provides food and shelter for the homeless and operates food distribution centres. And in the past year its services have been the most vital they have ever been.

Genesis Homes recently announced its partnership with Morrisons and The Salvation Army to raise money by encouraging people to knit small scarves to put on the top of bottles and hand sanitisers to sell through Morrisons stores.

To raise further funds the local house builder is organising a ‘wear your scarf to work, school or at home’ day on Friday 4th December and they’re wanting as many businesses, schools and those working from home to take part.

Nicky Gordon, MD for Genesis Homes said ‘We’ve had a great response to our initial scarf knitting appeal and there’s been some amazing creations dropped off at Morrisons. However, we want to raise as much money as we can for The Salvation Army to help those most in need this winter. We are promoting a wear your scarf day on 4th December and encouraging those who take part to hunt out their favourite scarf, whether it be plain wacky or their ‘Sunday best’ and donate £2 to help local people in need.”

Major Carole Donaldson, Penrith Salvation Army added: “This year the vulnerable and alone need The Salvation Army more than ever, which is why we will be sharing Christmas joy and practical support for vulnerable families, older people and anyone who needs extra support throughout the festive period.

“This is a fantastic initiative with Genesis Homes and Morrisons, who have been a great support to us as we’ve served the community throughout the pandemic making socially distanced visits to people struggling with isolation or who are far away from family to ensure they know someone cares. Throughout the year our food bank helps support those struggling to make ends meet, and we will continue to provide food, non-food items and hot meals to those in need.

“We want to thank everyone who has knitted scarves and look forward to our supporters digging out their best knitwear on 4 December to raise vital funds for presents for children who might otherwise go without, food parcels for those going hungry and for doorstep friendship for the lonely this Christmas.”
