It was incredibly touching to hear from residents who have claimed the creation of a new footpath will significantly improve the safety of pedestrians as a result of 90 new homes being built on the outskirts of Carlisle.
Members of Priorwood Close Residents’ Group have welcomed news that we will construct a footpath connecting our Sandsfield Way development at Orton Road to their housing estate, significantly improving visibility of the highway.
On Wednesday, Cumberland Council’s Planning Committee approved a planning application for 90 new homes on current agricultural land at Orton Road, to the west of Carlisle City Centre.
Speaking at the meeting, Kevin Smith, the secretary of Priorwood Close Residents’ Group, said: “Thank you to Genesis Homes for agreeing to include a footpath on their land that would alleviate the danger to pedestrians on Sandsfield Lane. We really appreciate this.
“They will save lives in the long run.”
The installation of the footpath is one of the many community benefits in addition to the creation of 90 new homes, which also includes the contribution of £409,800 towards local education.
We have also agreed to pay £78,433 to upgrade existing facilities on the nearby Yewdale Road and Richmond Green, and £30,000 towards the provision of artificial sports pitches across the area.
A mixture of two to five bedroomed homes will be built at Sandsfield Way, with 17 homes designated as affordable housing for local residents.
Our Managing Director, Nicky Gordon, said: “We are really excited to be building 90 high-specification, energy-efficient homes to benefit the local community, and are looking forward to getting on site now that full planning application has been granted by Cumberland Council.
“Supporting the cities, towns and villages we create new communities in is something Genesis Homes is extremely passionate about, and we are delighted to give something back to the local area. We have listened to the community and we’re pleased to be able to provide a footpath which residents themselves say will help improve people’s safety.
“A need for new housing has long been identified as a priority across Cumbria, and it is pleasing that we are able to create an attractive and sustainable development located within a fantastic setting on the periphery of Carlisle City Centre.
“The team at Genesis Homes is committed to preserving the character of this exceptional area, and creating a distinctive and characterful housing development which will enhance the existing landscape.”
An integrated Sustainable Urban Drainage System will be created on the development site to address any issues around flooding and drainage, and to encourage wildlife back to the site. This will be complemented by the creation of a neighbourhood green for the community to enjoy.
