Bethani makes exciting career progress after unexpected rugby pitch conversation

Posted on: November 20, 2024

From rugby teammates to work colleagues, Bethani Fearns is thriving in her new career at Genesis Homes.

The 20-year-old has made impressive strides as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor, a role she never imagined for herself until a chance conversation with her rugby teammate, Project Manager Josie Scrimgour, set her on a new career path.

Before joining Genesis Homes, Bethani had no idea about the vast career opportunities within the construction industry. That all changed when Josie mentioned a Trainee Quantity Surveyor vacancy at Genesis Homes. Intrigued, Bethani wanted to learn more.

“I was working as an apprentice technician with a company in the Sellafield supply chain at the time,” Bethani explained. “When Josie told me about the opening at Genesis Homes, I was unsure of what a Quantity Surveyor did. But after she explained the role, I was excited to give it a try—and I’m so glad I did.”

Bethani’s transition into the construction industry has been smooth, thanks to the support and guidance she’s received from the team at Genesis Homes. “It’s been a great first few months,” she shared. “I’ve had the chance to visit housing developments in Penrith and Kendal, which has given me a good mix of on-site experience. I’m really enjoying the variety of the role.”

As she settles into her new position, Bethani is inspired by Josie’s own success story—rapidly advancing from a trainee to Project Manager in just two years. With her sights set on a long-term career in construction, Bethani is eager to continue learning and growing in her role at Genesis Homes.

“I’m excited to be part of this team,” Bethani said. “I want to keep learning from everyone around me and see how far I can go in the industry.”

Outside of work, Bethani is an avid rugby player and has represented the Cumbria Women’s team.
