Top walking routes for your lovely winter walk

AS the end of the year approaches and the worst of the winter weather bites, it is all too easy to stay snuggled up warm in the surroundings of your own home.

But the frosty, cold weather can also make ideal conditions for a lovely winter walk in some of Cumbria’s most stunning settings, with the fallen leaves crumpling under foot and the surrounding white fields making a postcard picture.

We identify our favourite routes for winter strolls around our existing and upcoming housing developments.

Lowther Castle – near Lonsdale Park, Hackthorpe

With the ruins of a castle built in the early 1800s taking centre stage, Lowther Castle and Gardens is an instant hit with tourists. And there are no shortage of excellent walking spots around the area. One particular route which scores highly is the Ullswater Way, a 7.5-mile circular walk takes walkers past ancient burial cairns and stone circles as part of the Cop Stone and past the grand 13th century Askham Hall. The route is one of the most picturesque in the county, and there’s not too many better places to wrap up cosy and get out and about.

Ennerdale Water – near Beckstones, Rheda North Park

As you head west towards Whitehaven, you are spoiled with fantastic scenery and breathtaking walks. And a stroll round the tranquil Ennerdale Water is one of the most desirable routes in the Lake District – and that is quite some claim! There are a number of fantastic walks to choose from in the area, but completing the loop right round the water is the one which ticks all the boxes. Due to the remote nature of Ennerdale, there is plenty of time for reflection and quiet as walkers take in the 7.5-mile circuit.

Calthwaite – near Pennine View, Calthwaite

The upcoming development in the beautiful village of Calthwaite has many benefits, with the close proximity to the M6 scoring highly with commuters. But its biggest selling point has to be the stunning views of the surrounding Eden Valley which makes the area a huge draw to home buyers. With the rural location of the village comes some outstanding country walks right next to the planned development, and with the Grade-II listed Calthwaite Hall as a backdrop, a winter stroll comes highly recommended.

River Derwent – near Farries Field, Stainburn

With the sound of the river rushing by as you make your way close to the banks, strolling next to the Derwent is an idyllic walking route any time of the year. But it is particularly glorious during a crisp winter morning when all is quiet and peaceful when fewer people are out and about. The popular town of nearby Workington is popular for its coastal walks, but you can’t go far wrong with a lovely slow walk along the banks of the River Derwent.
