AS one of the UK’s most beautiful counties (we think it’s number one!), it’s little wonder that so many people choose Cumbria as the place to spend some quality time.
The wondrous fells and mountains of the Lake District are a real magnet for lovers of the great outdoors the world over, and the stunning scenery of the Lakes means that the area is a real hotspot for tourists wanting a relaxing break.
The county is famous as the adopted home of Peter Rabbit creator Beatrix Potter and also the home of the world’s largest pencil, and it attracts some of the UK’s biggest singing sensations at Carlisle’s Sands Centre.
Cumbria has a new claim to fame to boast about after it was revealed the county now has the highest number of Michelin starred restaurants in the UK outside of London.
The food and drink on the menu throughout the county is second to none and the total of 10 Michelin stars shared among the world class restaurants proves this.
The flagship restaurant of top chef Simon Rogan, L’Enclume in Cartmel is the star of the show and has become the first restaurant outside of the capital and the South East to be awarded three Michelin stars – an amazing achievement for the county and the north of England!
We’re extremely grateful to Simon for bringing the highest standards of fine dining to our doorsteps, and it’s great to see another of his restaurants – Rogan & Co which is also in Cartmel – retain its Michelin star as a real justification for the excellent reputation his places have.
Our congratulations go to the county’s newest star holder, the Dog and Gun Inn, near Skelton, which is in esteemed company as it joins Hrishi at Gilpin Hotel and Lake House in Windermere, Cottage in the Wood in Braithwaite, Allium at Askham Hall, The Forest Side in Grasmere and Old Stamp House in Ambleside.
We truly are spoiled for food in this wonderful county and it’s clear to see why so many foodies from across the UK, and beyond, make a bee-line to sample the treats and delights on offer throughout.
Bon Appetit!
